BREAKING NEWS: Paterson Pardons Slick Rick

“Mr. Walters (Slick Rick) has fully served the sentence imposed upon him for his convictions, had an exemplary disciplinary record while in prison and on parole, and has been living without incident in the community for more than 10 years,” Paterson said in a press release.“In that time, he has volunteered at youth outreach programs to counsel youth against violence, and has become a symbol of rehabilitation for many young people.”

Given these demonstrated rehabilitative efforts, I urge federal immigration officials to once again grant Mr. Walters relief from deportation, so that he is not separated from his many family members who are United States citizens, including his two teenage children.”

Paterson must have bumped The Great Adventures… back in the day.

It was real late last night and I was in an intense game of GTA IV (hella hours).  During a shootout with the LCPD, the Nas track “War is Necessary” came on and something hit me…I knew I had heard the drums before, but couldn’t place a finger on it.

Those crisp drums had definitely been used before, but it took me a while (and some research) to figure it out.  It turns out I was right, and those sampled drums were used on a Dilla beat (back in 2003).  The track was “Raw Shit,” by Jaylib (Jay-Dee and Madlib).

That’s not the only time Dilla drums were jacked either…

Looks like Kanye just got the bad news…

Kanye, Common, Method Man, and Redman Sued Over Jazz Sample

Apparently, all the aforementioned rappers got sued by the daughter of jazz musician Joe Farrell.  The original song was entitled “Upon This Rock” (1974).

Moral of the story: GET YOUR SAMPLES CLEARED!

Here are the tracks these samples were used on:

We’re keeping things southern this week again.  Listening to Dre’s verse on Thought Process got me back in that zone.  This week features Atlanta’s other left leaning, tea sipping, yoga practicing, soul stirrer Cee-Lo Green.  This track is off his extremely underated Cee-Lo Green is the Soul Machine Disc. A very inspiring tune, if I do say so myself…

There’s no doubt that Common is a great artist, putting out classic material for the past 15 years. He’s pleased both the hardcore hip-hop fans and the pop fans alike with a catalog full quality tracks. One album that fans found with mixed reviews was Electric Circus, which he experimented a little bit with the Soul Rock stylee. Neptunes were somewhat involved with that album, and though it worked out with Come Close, it didn’t really have the Common “feel”. Guess what. Common and the Neptunes are back, and they’re experimenting once again on the track “U.M.C. (Universal Mind Control)”.

After the lengthy discussion that’s been going on about MTV’s Hottest MCs right now, I decided put the spotlight on an MC that hasn’t been given enough credit throughout his entire career.  Black Thought has always been a great MC, but never really been considered on people’s hot list.  75 Bars should serve as a reminder as to what really matters in the MC field. The man just spits, and spits, and spits, and spits, and spits throughout the entire track, easily taking out 90% of MTVs Hottest MC list.  Dope, Hot, whatever adjective you want to use here, Black Thought goes off carrying the torch for all the skilled MCs out there.

I’m goin ape sh*t over the new Al Green album, Lay It Down.  This album is too good to not bless the site! Review coming soon.
