Hold on People
December 9, 2008

If you aren’t up to speed on this incredible LP from Eddie Kendricks, it’s pretty crucial that you start looking into it now. I’m just going to go out and say it…People, Hold On is ridiculous. Ridiculous in the sense that music like this is too rare to come by nowadays (more like near impossible), and if you’re a fan of soul music from the 70′s, this will be your jam.
Peep game after the jump…
The title track should immediately remind most hip-hop heads of a famous Dilla sample:
Anyone remember “People” from Dilla’s instrumental opus Donuts? Just speed up the BPM a little and presto…Well, it’s not that easy, but you should hear the sample use instantly. And damn, if the original isn’t crazy-ill itself.
Oh, and how about “Just Memories:”
Fans of M.O.P. or DJ Premier should recognize the above as the backone to their collaboration from Warriorz, “Follow Instructions:”
Another famous sample comes from “Girl You Need a Change of Mind:”
If you fast-forward to the 3:46 mark and go by the name of Pete Rock, here’s what you get:
The above tracks are just a taste of the soul that Kendricks provides throughout this great piece of work. Also, I didn’t even get to the biggest highlight of the LP yet. If you needed any further persuasion to hunt down a copy of the full-length, then here it is:
“Date With the Rain”
I mean, what? Is he being serious? “Rain” might be the single greatest soul track I’ve ever stumbled into. Headphones won’t do this one justice either. You need some serious speakers (bass-bass-crazy kickin) to fully get into this one.
You know a record is on point if you have hip-hop’s greatest producers freaking samples from the same album. I mean Dilla, Pete Rock, AND Premier? Not only is that impossible to find (unless your name is James Brown), but it further validates just how deep this Eddie Kendricks LP is.
Let’s just say I was crazy-stoked upon finding this record. People will get continuous rotation from here on out, and gives me further proof that all those days in the record store do pay off down the road. Please don’t hesitate on this joint, because I promise you won’t be let down…
