Sound of Da Police!

December 10, 2008

For Bass Radio this week, I thought I’d give some shine to one of the kings of this (you know, Knowedge Reigns Supreme Over Nearly Everybody).  Oh, and in celebration of the 2-hour Premier show on Real Late, I felt the production king deserved some additional recognition on this feature too…Woo-woo!

Watch out! We run New York!

Soulja Cent?

December 10, 2008

I typically don’t get into the drama stuff, but this is getting out of hand.  It’s pretty obvious that 50 Cent is influencing Soulja Boy to talk shit about everybody and anybody, in order to gain buzz (i.e. Ice T, etc.).  Now while he’s still making money from that ringtone sensation, he will never cut it against real-deal MC’s.  While Charles Hamilton comes off as gimmicky sometimes (not really feeling that Sonic business), he can still rhyme with some of the best.

Get off it Soulja Boy…Your 15 minutes is up, and hip-hop is trying to forget you.  Just lay down and die already!

Two Hours of Premier

December 10, 2008

Recently, Peter Rosenberg played an all DJ Premier set for 2-hours straight, in preparation for an upcoming event hosted by the radio personality.  You can catch the audio stream in two-parts below:

Real Late With Peter Rosenberg (Part 1)

Real Late With Peter Rosenberg (Part 2)

If you axe me, that’s 2-hours well spent.

Props to Nah.

Hold on People

December 9, 2008

If you aren’t up to speed on this incredible LP from Eddie Kendricks, it’s pretty crucial that you start looking into it now.  I’m just going to go out and say it…People, Hold On is ridiculous.  Ridiculous in the sense that music like this is too rare to come by nowadays (more like near impossible), and if you’re a fan of soul music from the 70′s, this will be your jam.

Peep game after the jump…

Bomb Squads

December 5, 2008

Bass Rocks is known for being a very opinionated site, especially when in comes to crowning the greats.  While we’ve dabbled in production and albums, we’ve yet to talk about groups.  In nearly 30 years, hip-hop has produced some incredible posses, that have shaped the genre into what it is today (good or bad).

While there are some obvious standouts, the controversial choices make the final verdict that much more challenging.

That being said, we’ve gone ahead and chosen our top ten list…Check it below.

Number One

December 5, 2008

Eminem: “Number One (Prod. Dr. Dre)”

Eminem is back in effect and killing it (like it’s 2000 again).  Above is a recent unreleased track from Marshall, which was intended to have Dre featured as well.  However, Em records Dre’s verses on this track, which sounds pretty crazy.  I’m guessing this was the version that was sent to Dre before he had a chance to jump in and record his part…Just listen, you’ll know what I’m talking about.

Instant Classic?

December 4, 2008

blu-exile-below-the-heavens

Wow, I missed the bus on this one pretty hard (August 2007 release date)…My boy got me a copy of Below the Heavens a couple days ago and insisted I give it a listen.

Start to finish this album is bananas.  From production (Exile) to lyrics (Blu), there isn’t one aspect of the record that brings it down by any means.  Actually, I should probably put that differently.  This is a perfect record all the way through.

With that said, how was I tripping so hard?  Was it just me, or did other people sleep on this release too?

Keep on keeping for a review…

Criminology

December 3, 2008

In celebration of going to see Wu-Tang live tonight, I thought it was only right to give the clan some extra shine on Bass Radio.  Also, it makes absolutely no sense that Raekwon has only now made the cut for this feature.  Too many bangers to name!  My bad bass heads…

First of all son/ peep the arson…

Brooklyn Goes Dumb

December 2, 2008

Jay-Z: “Brooklyn Go Hard (Prod. Kanye West)”

Goddam!  Jay-Z is really on one right now…Between this and “Jockin’ Jay-Z,” The Blueprint 3 sounds like another classic in the making.  Hov!

Breaking Down a Genius…

December 1, 2008

?uestlove wrote a great article over at Rappers I Know, where he recalls the process behind Blackstar’s “Little Brother” (CLICK HERE).  This is an incredible walk-through of the genius beat-making abilities of the late great Jay-Dee (R.I.P.), so make sure to check it out.

Oh, and try figuring out how he chops down the sample…I have no goddam clue.
