Relapse
May 19, 2009

It’s been four long years without music’s favorite villain, and it seems that the general public has gotten a little too comfortable in his absence. Well, Marshall is back in full force with his latest LP Relapse, which means it’s time to get uncomfortable once again.

100 Dolla Billz

MED: “100 Dolla Billz (Prod. Madlib)”
And just when I thought Stones Throw had forgotten about hip-hop, they go ahead and deliver two bangers in one day. Below is a new Guilty Simpson track, while the above is the first single from MED’s upcoming LP. His debut effort on Stones Throw was about as close to classic as possible, so I’m hoping he keeps this streak alive.
Now if only I could hear an update on the Madlib/Guilty project, as well as The Supreme Team…

Guilty Simpson: “Stress (prod. J Dilla)”
Apparently, the above track was recorded with Guilty Simpson and Dilla in 2004, but never saw the light of day due to sample-clearing issues. This isn’t a huge surprise since the sample comes from The Beatles’ “Lonely People,” which as we know has been tried before (successfully by Dangermouse).
“Stress” was supposed to make the Jay Stay Paid track list, but due to the aforementioned problems, is only available via free downloading. In other words, Michael Jackson is a hater.
UPDATE: “Stress” is from the Guilty/Dilla project from ’04 – ’05 that was never released. Some of the vocals were redone recently as well. HERE is an article where Guilty speaks about the collaboration in a little more depth.
Don’t forget to get the new Dilla joint on 6/2.

Losing Their Roots?
May 18, 2009

Recession anyone?
I love the Roots just like the next music junkie, but I almost fell out of my chair when I went to look at tickets for their upcoming show in San Francisco. Charging $250 for nose-bleed seats? Seriously? Please don’t tell me your recent gig with Jimmy Fallon had you turn Hollywood on the fans. This is absolutely ridiculous, especially from a group that has survived through their shows over the past years (no platinum plaques).
Oh, and the last time I tried to catch a Roots show was almost a decade ago at Bumbershoot in Seattle. Guess what? Not only did they not show up, but we had to sit through 2 hours of Rahzel’s little brother Kenny The Human Orchestra talking shit and wasting everyone’s time.
This is what you call a bad look, and now I’m not too sure how much I want to keep supporting a group that doesn’t take into consideration it’s true fans. Oh, and regardless how much money I make in life, I’ll NEVER drop $400 to see the Roots live. That idea blows my mind.
Infinitely Free
May 14, 2009

ThisIs50 is hosting a free download of Eminem’s debut into the rap-game Infinite (1996). This album got crazy play in my boombox back in the day (pre-Dre), especially that title track. Back in like 1999 though, my Jeep Cherokee (sheep-skin interior y’all) was broken into, and the perpetrator took every classic hip-hop album inside (like 200 total). Long story short, Infinite was one of those records that I never got back since then.
This is all to help boost the buzz for Em’s forthcoming LP Relapse, which officially drops on Tuesday..Review coming soon.
That’s a good look 50!

Jay Stay Paid Album Sampler (via Beat Junkies)
The World Famous Beat Junkies took it upon themselves to lace us Dilla fanatics with a sampler to his upcoming posthumous LP Jay Stay Paid (June 2nd; Nature Sounds). This is a real good look, and if you give it a listen make sure to turn the bass all the way up. Dilla stay the greatest.

Ma Dukes Reminisces…
May 11, 2009

I swear I almost lost my cool reading this article, and if you like Dilla’s music even a little bit, you probably will too. As sad as the story is, it’s also uplifting to know how much love James Yancey had for his art.
Sometimes I question when I drop $100 on a record, but it’s stories like this that make me not feel so crazy when I do.
Happy (belated) Mother’s Day to Ma Dukes too..
