It’s all about the drums on this one…Heard this golden era gem yesterday and had to pay some homage on Bass Radio for this week (hella late, I know).  From the same group that brought you “Toss It Up,” “Rakin in the Dough” is their less-than-notorious (but still mad hyphy) follow-up.  If you’re a fan of 90′s rap, this should be up your alley.  Peep game!

Feel It

Guilty Simpson: “Feel It”

The dude is ill…Not sure where this track will land, but regardless Guilty Simpson comes with it once again.  Produced by Style MiSia from Italy, “Feel It” is more good music from the Stones Throw frontman.

Thanks to 2DBz.

Slaughterhouse: “Woodstock (feat. M.O.P.)”

Above is the latest release from my new favorite supergroup, Slaughterhouse.  As promised, Joey leaked “Woodstock” from their upcoming full-length (8/11), which features Brownsville natives Mash Out Posse (for a total of 6 lyrical heavyweights).

In my opinion, Slaughterhouse not only makes hip-hop fun again, but stresses lyrical ability as well.  Both of which have been SEVERELY lacking in recent memory.

Plus, this song goes hard.  Yee!

Good look 2DB.

Happy Birthday Pac

June 16, 2009

While 2Pac isn’t one of my personal favorites, there’s no denying his legacy in hip-hop.  He was a great poet, and his music will more than likely stand the test of time.  Today would have marked his 38th birthday.

Happy Birthday and R.I.P.

Beats to the Rhyme

June 11, 2009

The recent Black Star 10th anniversary concert had me reminiscing when they payed tribute to Run DMC over “Beats to the Rhyme.”  This track was the B-Side to their “Run’s House” 12″ (also available on Tougher Than Leather), but played like it deserved it’s own A-Side.  Utilizing Bob James’ “Nautilus” from his classic LP One, “Beats to the Rhyme” is one of the few sleepers from the famous trio’s thick catalog…Plus, this is the pre-NWA era (1988), but the beat itself plays like vintage Dr. Dre, with the dirty sampling and heavy drums aplenty.

R.I.P. Jam Master Jay

…Immediately.  If you haven’t heard, Mr. Pink himself Charles Hamilton is placing James Yancey aka J Dilla as “Executive Producer” on his debut album, when in fact this is far from the truth.  According to him, Dilla lives on through his music and speaks to him spiritually.  A lot of Dilla supporters and associates find this as a slap in the face, and many view it as a lame marketing attempt.  Not only did he recently get punched in the face by a girl, but now he’s claiming to be down with the Yancey family (Ma Dukes and Illa J), as well as the Detroit hip-hop scene…All of whom have no clue who this kid is.

The above video is legendary Detroit DJ and Dilla associate House Shoes, calling Mr. Sonic the Hedgehog out for all of this recent nonsense.

It will really be nice when this guy stops making music, because he surely doesn’t respect those that came before him, or those who make real hip-hop…End it Charles!

Cruising through the New Release section at Amoeba last weekend, I came across an album I hadn’t heard about for some time.  The El Michaels Affair is a funk/soul group from NYC, and are an extended part of the Dap Kings family tree (along with Budos Band, etc.).  They became famous from their exclusive 45″ releases of classic Wu-Tang covers (i.e. “Glaciers of Ice” and “C.R.E.A.M.”), and after doing some local shows with Raekwon himself, demand for a full length cover album had skyrocketed.

That being said, this was a couple years ago, so seeing Enter The 37th Chamber chilling on the shelf was pretty surreal and caught me off guard.  Needless to say, I grabbed a copy with the quickness.

Thoughts after the jump..

Nino Bless: “Untitled (Detox Reference)”

Add another Detox reference into the mix!  Last time it was the T.I. & Nas leak, and the time before that it was a possible Bishop Lamont album joint during a live show.  Now, Nino Bless comes through with a real laid-back low-rider type Dre beat, perfect for an introduction to the (overtly) anticipated third album.  Nino really seems to channel the good doctor’s flow, and I for one am hoping this makes the final cut.

Props to 2DBz for killing it lately.

Death Of Autotune

Jay-Z: “D.O.A. (Death Of Autotune)”

Jigga is absolutely killing it right now with this one.  Nobody keeps hip-hop more alive and as relevant in the mainstream as Jay-Z, and he continues his recent onslaught with more classic material.  First “Jockin’ Jay-Z,” then “Brooklyn Go Hard,” and now “D.O.A.”?  Blueprint 3 is sounding like something special yo…

Shouts to Les for keeping it all the way New York.  FUEGO.
