Soul Superman

Young Jeezy (feat. Akon): “Soul Survivor (B.Cause Black Superman Fix)”

While I’m not a fan of Jeezy or Akon, the latest B.Cause remix is fresh enough to make me forget.  Taking the “Black Superman” beat over Jeezy’s “Soul Survivor” lyrics, and the outcome works better than the original…It also makes Young Jeezy sound like he’s from LA.  Ha.

Too Many Rappers

The Beastie Boys (feat. Nas): “Too Many Rappers”

Nas performed this track live at a recent Beastie show, and the buzz has been pretty heavy ever since.  The Hot Sauce Committee Pt. 1 is out September 15th, and from the above, it sounds like the trio are back doing what they do best.  While the beat isn’t mind blowing (ala “Intergalactic”), it does the job, and makes hip-hop proud by pairing a legendary lyricist with a legendary group.

Shouts to Nah.

No Title

July 20, 2009

I recently came across a gem at the record shop last week, with Live at the P.J.’s by Kool & The Gang (De-Lite).  While I’m used to hearing this LP mentioned by hip-hop royalty and rare groove write-ups, I had yet to actually give it a good listening session.  But knowing how dope early Kool & the Gang are (and really anything off De-Lite), I knew this record wouldn’t disappoint.

The track that was called to  my attention was the first on side A, entitled “N.T.” (aka “No Title”).  The most notable part about this joint (aside from how incredibly funky it is from start to finish), are the amount of recognizable samples throughout.  As this track comes off as improvisational, both the horn and flute freestyles caught my attention the most.

Straight Out The Jungle

July 20, 2009

First, I want to apologize for slacking lately on the post tip…Things have been a little hectic outside of the site, but everything is good and I’m back in action.  For this week’s (I should say last week’s) entry of Bass Radio I wanted to take it back to the beginning of the Native Tongue era.  ”Straight Out The Jungle” is the main single off The JB’s debut album (with the same title), and started a string of underground gems that still knock to this day.  They made a name for themselves with Straight, which laid the ground for their classic follow-up By the Forces of Nature.

Madlib Wired

July 15, 2009

Wire Magazine was able to sit down with The Beat Konducta himself, for his first interview in over 3 years (last one in 2006).  Since then, this is one producer who has been on his game in a time where hip-hop overall has suffered.  As one of the shining figures in the underground scene, Madlib has some real interesting stuff to cover, from all aspects of life.  Head over to Stones Throw for a nice excerpt, or (even better) head to your local magazine shop for the latest issue, which is out now.

Bloggers

Freeway & Jake One: “Blogger”

This is the first leak off Freeway & Jake One’s upcoming The Stimulus Package, which drops later this summer.  “Blogger” is Philly Freezer’s ode to the blogging game, whether good or bad (but always clowning).  Jake One is really holding it down for Seattle right now, and Freeway never disappoints, so we should be in for something special.

Early!

California Livin’

July 10, 2009

In celebration of Mac Dre’s recent birthday, it’s only right the Bass Radio entry this week would pay homage.  This track comes from his 1993 effort Young Black Brotha, which is a certified Bay Area classic.  Rest in peace Thizzelle Washington!

The LP

July 10, 2009

Unkut has a great piece on the legendary shelved project from Large Professer, The LP.  This was originally slated to drop in the mid-90′s, but do to label fuckery (surprised?) The LP never saw proper release.  It’s been rumored, debated, and pleaded for by hip-hop fans for over a decade, but now seems to finally be making it’s back from the dead.

The LP is available for download HERE, and is shipping on CD and double-vinyl (zing!) by end of month.  I’ve heard many stories about this infamous album, but have yet to hear it in it’s entirety.

Life As A Shorty

July 8, 2009

Fashawn: “Life As A Shorty (prod. Exile)”

This might be crazy-talk, but Fashawn is making hip-hop fun for me once again.  He comes from the old school era, where lyrics & content held precendence over mindless dance music (no shots).  This might be giving too much hype, but everything I’ve heard from his upcoming full-length with Exile (of  Below the Heavens) is on point.  Really looking forward to the full album, which drops in August…Anyone else getting a “Memory Lane” vibe from the above?

Toeachizown

July 8, 2009

Stones Throw Records recently announced the debut album from frontman Dam-Funk entitled Toeachizown, which will be released early this fall.  Toeachizown is a 5-part funk opus (consisting of LAtrik, Fly, Life, Hood, Sky), complete with his signature analog synth and old school drum machine mastery throughout.  The first part is available for download now from their site HERE.  Here’s an excerpt from the man himself:

“LAtrik is more of my ‘electric style’ (hence the title of this volume) which is influenced by, yet never bitin’, such great artist as Juan Atkins (Cybotron) & Prince to name just a few. It also highlights the more Modern sounds of L.A. based Funk right now with instrumentals like ‘Toeachizown’ & vocal tracks like ‘Mirrors’ which, I feel are distinctly my sound, humbly speaking. I hope U dig it, as this was made 4 U! Stay tuned 4 Volumes: 2. 3, 4, & 5. - D-F”

Don’t sleep!
