Wait…No “Jockin Jay-Z?”  That has to be one of my favorites from Hov’s classic catalog, so I’m wondering what will happen to that track.  I hope that wasn’t just a throwout.  Was “Brooklyn Go Hard” only meant for the Notorious soundtrack?  I could have sworn he confirmed that both of these tracks would be on BP3.

Out the gate, this looks a little too cluttered with guest appearances (Swizz Beatz?), but I’ll have to reserve my judgment until hearing the album in its entirety.  There’s a lot riding on this album being successful (both artistically and commercially), so jigga man has no other option than to knock it out the park.  Don’t fail us Jay!

Still looking forward to BP3 regardless..

We Don’t Play

August 14, 2009

Frescho & Miz dropped this dope track from their 1990 first and only 12″ as a duo.  This record plays more like an EP, featuring 3 tracks and 2 instrumentals total.  Ever since nabbing this gem it’s been in constant rotation, so if you get the chance to cop, don’t hesitate…

Sample Clearance Hate

August 14, 2009

Unkut has a phenomenal series right now, touching on classic rap cuts that were denied by the time they reached the sample clearance stage.  There are some real gems that made the list, but I have to roll with the “Taxi” sample in Souls of Mischief’s “Cab Fare.”  That one stayed in rotation back in the day..

Peep: Part 1; Part 2

Boy Meets World Cover Art

August 13, 2009

Fashawn

Above is the official cover art for Fashawn’s upcoming full-length with Exile, Boy Meets World.  All signs point to this being a great album, so I’m hoping they both come through for the win.  Oh, and nice tribute to Illmatic by the way(even if it wasn’t intentional (yeah right)).

Ski Beatz DJing

August 13, 2009

(Late pass) Yesterday, Ski Beatz posted the above video on Youtube, which showcases his latest venture into the DJ world.  If you don’t know who Ski is, go listen to Reasonable Doubt and Uptown Saturday Night and get back at me.

That “Rock the Boat” re-edit is pretty dope..

Making of “Dead Presidents” after the jump.

Spinna in the Studio..

August 10, 2009

Above is a promo video for Spinna’s upcoming project entitled Sonic Smash.  In the video, Spinna walks us through his vinyl-filled studio, and pulls out some gems that have inspired him over the years.  I came up on the De La Soul EP with his remix to “Stakes Is High” over the weekend (orange vinyl son!), so this one strikes a chord.

Dude seriously has his vinyl game on lock, making me wish I could spend a Sunday looking through those crates…Oh, and that Skull Snaps 45″ is bananas.

Be True To Yourself

August 7, 2009

I heard this track the other day and bugged out pretty hard.  DJ Quik on the beat, killing it as he always did back in the early 90′s.  2nd II None was first brought to my attention with their contribution to the Above the Rim soundtrack back in the day, but besides that I’ve slept on their material altogether.  I can’t seem to find this anywhere on 12″, so if anyone has a copy laying around in decent shape get at me!

Mama always told me there’d by days liiike thiis…

Blue Scholars: “Hi-808″

Blue Scholars: “Coffee & Snow”

After the recent announcement of their partnership with Duck Down Records, Blue Scholars take it a step further by providing streams of two joints from their forthcoming OOF! EP.  “Hi-808″ is my type of track, that not only feels like an ode to the golden era, but also a brief revival of the hyphy movement.  Being a Seattle transplant in San Francisco, this is the type of joint that speaks to me (slapper!).  “Coffee & Snow” is that vintage Blue Scholars sound that we’ve all come to know and appreciate.

Two solid efforts from one of the best duos in the game…Making me proud!

MCA Recovering

August 5, 2009

According to Rolling Stone, Beastie Boys’ frontman MCA is successfully recovering from surgery to remove a cancerous tumor in his throat, which took place about a week and a half ago.  He was recently diagnosed with cancer of the parotid gland, which put a pause to all forthcoming shows and promotion of their upcoming project Hot Sauce Committee Part 1 (originally slated for a 9/15 release).  This is incredible news, and Mr Yauch seems to be in good spirits:

“I do think that all of the well wishes have contributed to the fact that my treatment and recovery are going well,” Yauch concludes. “Much love back at all of you!”

Glad to hear my personal favorite MC of the group is on the upswing.  Here’s to getting healthy and keeping the good music flowing.

?uest of the legendary Roots crew pays dues to Slum Village frontman Baatin, including his timeless contributions to hip-hop.  He reflects on some of his best memories of Baatin and Slum Village, including the first time he heard Fantastic Vol. 1 and how it changed his life.  Here’s an excerpt:

that was the last time i was jaw dropped in music from a fan standpoint. it was so incredible i didn’t even feel threatened by them. i was like FINALLY SOMETHING TO INSPIRE ME! they manged to squeeze the last bit of life out of that innocent period of hip hop in which you made music with your peers in mind (not your press).
