Call Me

Joell Ortiz (feat. Novell): “Call Me”
This is so nice right now…I have no clue where this track will end up, but I’m hoping it gets the official release treatment. No shots at the mixtape route, but this is too nice not to be on a debut LP. Such a classic Al Green joint, but sounding like it’s also about to become a classic 2009 hip-hop joint. Cottam!
UPDATE: This will in fact get the official treatment. “Call Me” is the first single off his upcoming debut Free Agent. So far so good..

When was the last time Madlib made a beat this hard? Maybe Jaylib’s “Filthy McNasty?”
All I know is this project was just brought to my attention, and it’s the first time I’ve heard Strong Arm Steady over Madlib. Apparently, there will be an entire album full of SAS/Madlib collabo goodness coming soon. Oh, and on Stones Throw too…

Remember Gully Snoop?

Snoop Doggy Dogg: “Fallin Asleep on Death Row (Prod. Dr. Dre)”
Welllll…Here you go. Above is a previously unreleased Snoop Dogg track from his Death Row sessions with Dr. Dre (maybe for Doggystyle?). My guess is this was leaked from the estate that recently bought rights to all Death Row material. If you ask me, there’s nothing better on this green earth than Snoop Dogg during the earlier stages of his career.
Props NahRizzite.

Brother Ali (feat. Joell Ortiz & Freeway) “Best At It”
Not sure if this is the first single for Brother Ali’s upcoming LP US, but regardless this one is dope. Three of the nicest MC’s out right now over a nice guitar riff, killing mics as usual. I hope this album is a slapper, and continues the momentum that Brother Ali’s been on recently (White Van Music).
US in stores 9/22. Don’t sleep…

CuDi Sounding Very SV-ish
September 16, 2009

Live on NY radio with Rosenberg, CuDi mixed it up by freestyling (no BlackBerry) over vintage Dilla beats. While the lyrics aren’t mind-blowing, something about his flow sounds very right over these old Slum Village tapes. Maybe the whole sing/simple rap thing just brings me back to Fantastic Vol. 2.
Regardless, CuDi is starting to grow on me. Not mad at all!

Raekwon (feat. Ghostface): “Badlands” (UK only)
Raekwon: “Walk With Me” (iTunes only)

More of the Same?

Jay-Z: “Hate (feat. Kanye West)”
Hmm..Now I’m a little confused. What we’ve heard since “D.O.A.” has been sub-par to completely forgettable. Above are the two latest leaks from BP3 (out September 11th), which leave me scratching my head a little more. “Thank You” is a cut above everything thus far (minus “D.O.A.” of course), while “Hate” is a little bit more of the same.
Like I said before, I’ll reserve judgement until hearing the album in its entirety, but things aren’t looking so hot for the jigga man right now.
Key to a classic = More No ID + less Kanye West. Did I miss anything?
Props Nah.

Raekwon (feat. Lyfe Jennings): “Catalina (prod. Dr. Dre)”
It was only a matter of time before we got the chance to hear Rae over Dr. Dre from the earlier Aftermath sessions. The above track is classic Dre mixed with classic Chef, and the combination couldn’t be any more perfect.
Raekwon continues to make me a believer in his upcoming follow-up, forcing OB4CL2 onto the Bass Rocks #1 most anticipated spot (followed by Fashawn & Exile for the close second).
Oh, and the intro brings me back to the original Only Built…
Black Milk On One
August 21, 2009

Detroit’s-own beatsmith Black Milk has been releasing fire lately, and I felt it shouldn’t go unnoticed on Bass Rocks. Nah Right has been all over these, so without further ado, here you go:
Heat! Oh, and feel free to drop Tronic 2 anytime soon. I’m just sayin..

Rare Eminem Tracks Released
August 19, 2009

This morning 4 rare Eminem tracks hit the web, from his studio sessions with Chaos Kid as the duo Soul Intent (1988 – 1992). I’ve never had a chance to listen to these joints before, but I remember hearing about his 90′s crew Bassmint Productions, but never actually hearing any material from this era. Here they are:
Soul Intent: “Unrealistically Graphic”
Soul Intent: “Artificial Flavour”
Eminem feat. Proof “Hammer vs. Vanilla”
Pretty crazy to hear the evolution of Marshall from his Bassmint days, to Dr. Dre, to dissing Mariah Carey out of desperation. Not a good look!
